Conference interpreting
Simultaneous
Members of the interpreting team are closeted in a sound-proof booth and interpret simultaneously. This is the usual type of interpreting used at conferences, seminars, TV spectaculars and so on.
A second type of simultaneous interpreting involves using a so-called “Infoport system” (also known as “mobile interpretation unit”, a portable, cable-free interpreting system which does not necessitate a booth. This technique is most commonly employed during, for example, guided tours of production facilities, or at relatively small board or other business meetings, but would be unsuitable for a conference or seminar.
Whispering (“Chuchotage”)
This form of interpreting dispenses with technical aids and involves whispering directly “into the ear” and is only suitable for a maximum of two or three people. Whispered interpretation is particularly strenuous for the interpreters involved, so prior discussions and consultation are necessary.
Consecutive
The interpreter does not have any technical equipment, making notes during a speech and then repeating what was said in the target language. This type of interpretation is appropriate for comparatively short statements, at receptions or official dinners for example, or for business discussions/negotiations, though this last usually necessitates a minimum of two interpreters. “Consec”, as it is often called, means working under intense pressure and demands absolute concentration, so some interpreters decline “consecutive” assignments. Another case where the advice of a consultant interpreter is almost essential and can provide invaluable information.
Liaison Interpreting
For example: when an interpreter accompanies a delegation to talks or other official functions, frequently held in successive cities or countries, working simultaneously or consecutive as required. (This should not be confused with the work of foreign-language speaking staff provided by protocol departments).
Videoconferencing
A videoconference (e.g. using your corporate VPN network) makes it possible to connect several people across different continents. Then they communicate via a screen, even giving, or following, presentations and being just as spontaneous and emotive as if they were physically in the same place. With only a minimum time delay, this allows interpretation to take place, provided the required as long as the required state of the art technology (top quality visual and audio channels) and competent technicians are available. If you don’t have the facilities, we would be happy to help you hire them, or to recommend specialist videoconference companies who are familiar with.
